Description
The Sovereign is a ¼ oz. gold coin and has been around for over 500 years. It has been the most widely accepted gold coin in the world.
The Royal Mint’s Sovereign coin has a rich history that dates back to 1489, when Henry VII gave personal authority for the production of a new coin made in gold . The coin would be the largest issued in England at that time and was to be called a ‘Sovereign’, deliberately suggesting a close association with the king.
The Sovereign is one of The Royal Mint’s flagship coins, it’s history, beauty and worldwide liquidity making it deserving of its status as the “Chief Coin of the World”.
This coin bares Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic St. George slaying the dragon design. This has remained on the Sovereign for over 200 years. The design represents the triumph of good over evil, a popular theme since the 12th century. The dragon symbolizes evil, and St. George is a symbol of chivalry, knighthood, national pride, and valor. It’s considered one of the most renowned reverse designs in the world.
This is the first time The Royal Mint has ever struck a silver Sovereign. The silver Sovereign is identical in diameter and weight of the gold version.
This coin is certified First Day of Issue and is graded perfect Proof 70. This coin also boasts a shield privy mark that celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Hanoverian Royal Arms design.
The label is signed by Martin Jennings, the master engraver of King Charles’ portrait.
