Why is the Snow Leopard special?

Because of its shy behavior and uncanny ability to blend in with its surroundings, the Snow Leopard is regarded as the “Ghost of the Mountains” to the people of Mongolia.   For some locals, there is a belief that the snow Leopard is a shape-shifting entity that not only protects the mountain spirits but is an ethereal being that has earned the respect of shamans.

Despite this, the number of snow leopards continues to decline. Three factors are behind the decline of their population, all of which are caused by man: loss of habitat, loss of prey species, and hunting. Today there are only about 5,000 snow leopards in the wild, living in the high mountains of Aszia where Mongolia is home to the second largest population of snow leopards in the world.

Design

With these coins, that technology allows the intertwining of both an Ultra High Relief image of a selectively colorized Snow Leopard staring off the coin with a ghosted image of another wearing a snarling expression on its face in the background. The detail is so exquisite that you see every tuft of fur in the big cat’s incredibly detailed visage!

The obverse design presents a stunning image of the leopard’s paw and claws rising off the surface in sharp relief along with a geometric field pattern containing the date, and the Bank of Mongolia’s Coat of Arms.

Released in 2024 on behalf of Mongolia, each Three-Ounce Silver Snow Leopard Ultra High Relief coin is 2000 Tögrög legal tender and comes in Proof condition. These coins were expertly crafted by the mint from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields. Each coin will also come beautifully housed in an airtight capsule displayed in a transparent presentation case and accompanied by a mint-issued Certificate of Authenticity.
